Program Event: Audre Lorde's Birthday Celebration

Mar 21, 2025

As part of USU's Inclusion Center, the Women and Gender Equity Program hosted various events, with intersectional feminism as a key cornerstone. One annual event was the celebration of Audre Lorde, a prominent figure in intersectional feminism. This event honored Lorde’s legacy, highlighting her self-description as a Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, and poet.

For Audre Lorde’s Birthday Celebration, I created promotional materials, including digital signage and buttons, and compiled a selection of her poems alongside other Women & Gender pins. To enhance the event experience, I incorporated light refreshments and curated a visually engaging atmosphere. The promotional designs featured a quote on intersectional feminism, emphasizing the complexity of intersecting struggles for freedom and equality. Additionally, I developed a unique event logo, ensuring a cohesive and recognizable brand across materials. Promotional signage was displayed on Instagram, and on displays throughout USU's Logan campus.

The color scheme matched the Women and Gender Equity Lounge’s Lending Library color scheme: purple and pink. In contrast to my first year hosting the event—when I used a photo of Audre Lorde on digital signage—I opted for a more creative, minimalistic design. I designed a stylized, recognizable image of Lorde using simple yet eye-catching colors, which appeared on both the event buttons and promotional signage.

I coordinated with USU Catering and managed a budget for a maximum of 50 attendees, providing donuts, cookies, hot drinks, poem booklets, and button supplies. The event exceeded expectations, with a turnout of 43 attendees—surpassing our goal of 30, which matched the previous year’s attendance.
